Not only it’s tasty, healthy, nutritious, it is easy to make, and can be made with different flavors: miso, garlic, lemon, butter, and black pepper. Today we will be making a Garlic Basil Lemon Baked Salmon. Yumm

Thanks to the Salmon sales at the grocery store next door, I stocked up on salmon and started reading into the salmon sustainability. If you want to read the sustainability of salmon, keep reading but might make you reconsider eating salmon. If you aren’t curious, skip the next part.

Salmon are anadromous, can live in both fresh and salt water. After years of living at sea, Salmon return to the river in to give birth to spawn. Scientist have not figure out how they are able to do this (some theories said salmon follows the Earth’s magnetic, others say salmon uses their strong sense of smell to guide them home). The last decade, there has been a spike of salmon demand and the natural production of salmon isn’t able to keep up with the demand. As the result, we (human) catch adult before the salmon spawn and grow the spawn in the fish farm to increase the survival rate. As the spawn grow a larger, it is then release the into the wild. I thought this was the end of the story… thank god I wasn’t reincarnation into a salmon. Living in the wild is hard… predators (birds, seal, human, and beer) and change of landscape (dam). These fish has to swim up the ladder, down stream, up the stream just to survive and make it to the ocean. As the result, many steps of their growth are heavily facilitated by us. For example:

  • 1 billion dollar a year are committed to columbia salmon river recovery to protect the ROI:  including shooting seal bombs to drive seals back to the ocean
  • Campaign of bounty hunt of Pikeminnow: up to $8 per fish. Multimillion dollar campaign per year
  • Boat trucks that carry the salmon down river: 50 million dollar per year spent

This made me question: what percentage of the salmon would be present without human’s interference?

Still craving for some salmon? **good thing I already ate the salmon before reading this.**
